Five hundred dedicated bikers endured 24 grueling hours of off-road cycling across the Mendip Hills on Saturday, in aid of the CLIC Sargent cancer charity.Teams and solo riders had to complete as many 10-mile laps as possible within the time limit during the CLIC24 challenge, which took in moorland, bridleway, woodland and Tarmac at Charterhouse, near Cheddar. The endurance challenge began with a tribute lap by event founder Neil Wilkins, of Burrington, in memory of his wife Helen, who died from cancer last year. Two teams -Bike City, of Wells, and The Cycle Store, of Cheddar - were among the huge turnout for this year's event to pursue their ongoing friendly challenge to see who can do the most laps.Ultimately, the Wells team upheld its four-year winning streak by clocking up 31 laps to Cheddar's 30.Riding for Bike City in the team event was, Iain Payne, Marcus Williams, Ollie Taylor and Julian Grundy. Amazing 31 laps were completed.Solo Chris Cooknell 21 Laps and Paul Main 14 Laps.Bike city also entered a second team, Nigel Marsh, Kevin Pike, Ewan Hyde and Julian Brine, who managed to compleat a highly commendable 23 laps.Team Bike City combined laps = 89, that's 890 miles and 89,000 ft of climbing or lands end to john o groats and climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest 3 times. Another honour went to Wells team member Chris Cooknell, who notched up 21 laps within the time limit despite heavy, persistent rain and 40mph winds turning the downhill parts of the course into rivers and muddy quagmires.Organisers are still counting the money raised but hope to beat last year's total of £50,000.Ninety per cent of the event's profits will go directly to the charity and a total of 18,900 miles was cycled - the equivalent of cycling round the British Isles coastline twice.CLIC24 was started in 2002 with 50 riders, and has now become one o

1 Vote(s)

CLIC24 2009..... this time it's personal There's an irony that through the years of working with you to help raise money to support children with cancer, that it should be the very same disease that takes a young, vibrant and widely loved woman from us. Since 6 October, I and my riding buddies have been deeply affected by the sad loss of my wife Helen who was beaten by breast cancer following an 18 month struggle through the pain and emotion of diagnosis and treatments. I now feel first hand what it's like to lose someone to cancer and this makes me ever more determined that CLIC24 2009 will be both a celebration of the lives of those who lose their battles to the disease, at the same time as helping those who will eventually recover, through the turmoil and distress of one of the toughest experiences life can throw at us If you have been part of CLIC24 in previous years or perhaps have considered riding but not quite made it yet, please make 2009 the year that you are part of our event. I would like to invite you to join me on a 'personal tribute lap' at the start of the event. 500 riders... riding together in memory of someone close to you or as a tribute to a sick friend ....

1 Vote(s)

"A reliable, stable workhorse for day-long rides, but can suffer when ridden at speed" Marin's early Nineties Eldridge Grade was an iconic bike with mass appeal. Light enough and well enough specced to take on most challenges, it soon became a popular favourite. The classic silhouette and geometry of the '09 version proves this is still a bike that wants to be all things to all riders.

1 Vote(s)

Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series 2009 & entry facilities now openThe 2009 Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series will be once more sported by our long standing and loyal sponsor Merida Bikes. For the 2009 series will again 5 UK events plus one ‘Merida Marathon on Holiday' round in Austria up for grabs, all together we have 29 courses to choose from which will allow riders of all ability to find the ideal challenge. We have been busy on the marathon website and the site is now includes the downloadable entry forms and the updated online entry. Riders will be able to enter all Merida bikes MTB marathons (except the Austria round) and Gore Bike Wear Sportives through the entry facilities. The marathon concept:As in previous years all events will have four different course lengths to choose from so that every rider can find a suitable challenge. The exception to this rule is the Exposure Lights Big Night Out weekend where there is one course length on Saturday night and three different lengths on Sunday. The courses are approximately 25, 50, 75 and 100km long. All marathons are run as non-competitive one loop rides with the start and finish being conveniently located in the event village and the camp ground. All rides have mass starts where all courses and categories start together. As always every entered rider is invited to take part in the pre marathon ‘carbo loading' at the pasta party and will be given the obligatory finishing T-shirt when coming over the finish line.

1 Vote(s)

Sunday 18 January, a day that kicked off wet (after a week of wet), soon turned the tables and whilst it was great to see a bit of sunshine it also spelled disaster for the track at Newnham Park which would turn into a sticky quagmire as soon as it started to dry out.Team Bike City riders in attendance were Iain Payne in elite/expert, Ollie Taylor,Julian Brine and Marcus Williams in Masters, Rob Owen in Grand Vets and Simon Pain in Vets. From the start it was hammer down with a flat start into tight singletrack that would have been tough on a good day but was even tougher on this day as the singletrack was 3-4 inches deep in mud and reduced the chances of a big gear start to more like a fishtailing low gear clown show. That aside the course was actually pretty good, 100% rideable - but 100% tough. The flat sections were mud or technical off camber sections, and the rest of the track was either a savage climb or a descent that really demanded going flat out.	Grand vet1st 01:16:56 Rob OwenExpert/elite1st 01:50:22 Iain Payne buy 8 mins on a single speed (flying hero)Masters1st 01:32:48 Ollie Taylor5th 01:40:29 Marcus Williams19th 01:59:17 Julian Brinevets5th 01:51:21 Simon Pain

1 Vote(s)
